Yep, you may have figured it out. We didn’t cover the release of the SIII; Samsung’s flagship phone, especially after our review of our test Galaxy S Plus. Nevertheless, here’s the news. The phone debuted last week, with a lot of world-class, eye-popping features.
We say that, because the Galaxy S III is simply special. Here’s why. The new SIII comes with a PenTile Super AMOLED screen instead of a Super AMOLED Plus unit like the rest of the lineup because, Samsung are banking on the old set-up to make the display last longer.
As it turns out, the RGB AMOLEDs degrade much faster than the PenTile AMOLEDs, so the picture quality becomes worse faster. The case is with the blue pixels, as they degrade faster than the red and green pixels. The PenTile displays have less blue pixels because of the RGBG subpixel layout and that’s why they have longer life span.

However we think PenTile produces, a lot of color fringing is present on high contrast edges (e.g. white text on a black background), which tends to get in the way of displaying crisp edges and fine detail. Moreover, the set-up is also cheap to mass-manufacture.

Samsung wants to ensure top-notch display quality, even two or three years after the users get their Galaxy S III and it seems the only way is to use PenTile displays. Well that should answer the SII owners queries on upgrading…
